SCRANTON
Most of the 120 or so residents displaced during a Wednesday night fire at an apartment building in Scranton were able to return home within a few hours, the American Red Cross said.
The Scranton Fire Department was called to Washington West Apartments, 537 N. Washington Ave., at 8:52 p.m. after a chair caught fire and extended to the sofa of the sixth floor of the building. Fire crews quickly put the fire out. It was not clear Thursday morning how the fire ignited.
Dave Skutnik, a spokesman for the Red Cross, said that those still displaced are lodged by the Scranton Housing Authority or taken in by family or friends.
