SCRANTON — A city woman was arrested after police said she attacked her boyfriend in a car on the McDade Expressway.

On Wednesday, Jennifer McGreevy, 330 13th Ave., was riding in a car with Daniel Jezorwski when the two began to argue about her drinking.

During the argument, Ms. McGreevy hit Mr. Jezorwski several times in the face, police said.

He pulled over and Ms. McGreevy hit him several more times, then bit his arm, before he called police. The officer saw marks on Mr. Jezorwski, including a red area on his arm.

The 39-year-old woman was charged with simple assault and harassment. She is free on $10,000 unsecured bail. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Keystone landfill opponents hope zoning law can stop expansion

$

0

DUNMORE — Plans to expand Keystone Sanitary Landfill may violate the borough’s zoning law that restricts the height of structures, opponents of the expansion say.

Proponents, however, argue the landfill is not a structure.

Keystone has applied for state Department of Environmental Protection permission to carve out 450 acres of its 714-acre property split between Dunmore and Throop for the expansion. The area includes swaths of four smaller existing landfills, and the space between them.

Landfill officials want to pile waste to an eventual height of 175 feet higher than the currently permitted peak to a total of

475 feet above ground level — nearly triple the height of Scranton’s 14-story Bank Towers, the county’s tallest building — to extend Keystone’s dwindling space enough for nearly a half century more of operations.

Answering the complicated legal question of how the zoning law would relate to the landfill starts with a simple query: Is the landfill a structure?

The answer is important because Dunmore’s 2000 zoning ordinance limits the height of buildings and structures in M-1 zones — in which the Keystone resides on the Dunmore side of the landfill — to 50 feet.

Dunmore’s zoning handbook defines a structure as: “Anything constructed or erected, the use of which requires location on the ground or attachment to something having a fixed location on the ground.” It goes on to list examples like buildings, mobile homes, swimming pools, carports, walls, fences and billboards.

“I think you would find a legitimate debate as to whether it is a structure under the zoning laws,” landfill consultant Albert Magnotta said.

Dunmore resident Pat Clark, a licensed attorney who is concerned about the expansion, argued Keystone is indeed a structure and cited a Commonwealth Court ruling from January that found a similar height restriction in Liberty Twp. applied to a proposed 99.27-acre landfill site in Mercer County.

The decision “may be cited for its persuasive value but not as a binding precedent,” according to the written opinion.

From Mr. Clark’s perspective, Keystone is not naturally-occurring but is manmade, and therefore is a structure.

Even if the landfill is a structure, however, Mr. Magnotta believed the zoning rule would not apply because the landfill is a “pre-existing use,” meaning Keystone’s use of the land was grandfathered in.

Mr. Clark said just because the borough has not enforced height restrictions dating back to the 1960s, does not mean the landfill should have a blank check to expand forever.

“If a landfill is a structure, then it seems entirely reasonable for a municipality to be able to govern its height,” Mr. Clark said. “If it cannot, there is no logical limit to how high a landfill can grow.”

Zoning board solicitor Bill Jones said it would not be appropriate to weigh in, given he is representing Dunmore in negotiating a new contract with Keystone that would determine new financial benefits to the borough hosting the landfill.

Matters like the Keystone debate are complex, and court decisions vary depending on the specific facts of the case at hand, said attorney Bruce Zero, who is experienced in municipal law in Lackawanna County but not involved in the expansion issue.

“Generally, zoning laws are to be liberally construed to the broadest possible use of the land,” Mr. Zero said. “But they are also to be construed within the plain, ordinary meaning of the words in the ordinance.”

Mr. Zero said he could not give a more detailed opinion without careful study of Dunmore’s zoning ordinance, but indicated it could be a tough call.

Members of Dunmore Borough Council said they are researching the matter, but if they did attempt to challenge the expansion based on the zoning ordinance, a costly, protracted legal battle with an uncertain outcome would likely ensue.

DEP officials typically prefer zoning matters be ironed out before the agency approves an application, said DEP spokeswoman Colleen Connolly.

If the agency were to approve Keystone’s expansion, any group that feels the move violates the borough’s zoning laws could still appeal the decision with the state Environmental Hearing Board.

DEP’s position is that state law trumps local laws, but the Environmental Hearing Board would ultimately decide if it got to that point, Ms. Connolly said.

DEP officials are reviewing the landfill’s application to ensure it is complete and have not begun the more-detailed technical review.

FERC issues final environmental review for Constitution Pipeline

$

A brand-new, 124-mile pipeline from Susquehanna County to New York is one step closer to being laid in the ground after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released its final environmental impact statement Friday.

Constitution Pipeline would have “some adverse environmental impacts,” but if the pipeline company sticks to its proposed mitigation plans and FERC’s recommendations, “these impacts would be reduced to less than significant levels,” the document states.

The project is a 30-inch- diameter pipeline capable of shipping 650 million cubic feet of gas per day, enough to power 6.2 million homes if burned for electricity, according to FERC estimates. The plan also includes several meter stations, pipe interconnection, communication towers, mainline valves, and launchers and receivers for maintenance devices known as pigs.

The line would begin off T-548, also known as Turnpike Road, in Brooklyn Twp., Susquehanna County, and end in Schoharie County, New York.

During construction, the pipeline company would use strips of construction rights of way ranging from 125 feet wide in agricultural uplands to 75 feet wide in wetlands. The permanent right of way will be 50 feet wide.

During construction, the project will affect 1,871.5 acres, the equivalent of about 1,417 football fields. About 762 acres, or about 577 football fields, will remain as permanent rights of way.

Along the way northeast, the pipeline will cross 289 bodies of water. For 21 of these crossings, crews will drill and thread pipe through the ground underneath the streams or ponds. For the other 268, they plan to use various dry crossing methods, which involve damming, pumping or diverting water around the trench where they lay the pipe. Wet crossing methods “could be considered if the dry crossing options are rendered infeasible,” the document states.

“Constitution has adjusted its proposed route and extra workspaces in numerous locations to better avoid waterbodies,” it states. “We have reviewed Constitution’s proposed mitigation measures and find them acceptable.”

Constitution Pipeline is a joint venture among pipeline company Williams, Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., Piedmont Natural Gas Co. Inc. and WGL Holdings Inc.

Cabot has agreed to ship about 500 million cubic feet of its gas per day on the new line, spokesman George Stark said. The other 150 million goes to Southwestern Energy Co.

In third quarter earnings calls Friday for both companies, investment analysts quizzed the CEOs on what the line would mean for them, according to transcripts by Seeking Alpha.

Constitution is among the most significant near-term infrastructure projects for Cabot in the Marcellus region, CEO Dan Dinges told investors.

“We think we are going to be able to get a half (billion cubic feet) of our gas to a different price point,” Mr. Dinges said. “And that price point certainly currently and historically has been a better price point than the general market. So that is attractive to us.”

Leidy Southeast and Atlantic Sunrise, two other Williams pipeline projects, are also crucial for the company, which operates many of the top-producing wells in the state.

“All in all, it’s shaping up,” Cabot senior vice president for marketing Jeffrey Hutton said. “We are thrilled about (the) Constitution step forward, but there is always additional capacity that’s on the horizon. We are always looking to get it.”

Southwestern’s CEO Steven Mueller had less to say.

“I don’t know that we have any thoughts on that too much,” he told an analyst. “We follow (it) just like everyone else does.”

The next major step is to get approvals from New York State, he said.

“Unless there is some kind of mis-estimate on water crossing or road crossings, it’s a relatively short process,” he said.

Constitution plans to begin construction as early as February and finish by the end of 2015, the document states. Before it begins work, it must get final FERC approval in the form of a certificate of public convenience and necessity, along with other permits from state and federal agencies.

Once that happens, the company can use eminent domain acquire a permanent right of way from a landowner who doesn’t want to sell, though it must compensate them.

That’s the fate 57-year-old New Jersey resident Janet Terchek wanted to avoid when she sold her property to Constitution.

A retired postal worker, Ms. Terchek grew up in New Jersey. But with parents from Forest City, she often visited Susquehanna County growing up. She purchased property in Harmony Twp., the county’s northeast corner, to build her dream retirement home.

When the pipeline company came, she told them she wasn’t interested, but the looming possibility of losing her land anyway made her choose to sell.

There were also the changes wrought by an industry she doesn’t support. She said she visited the county last weekend to see her aunt and was overwhelmed with the truck traffic, pipelines, well pads and compressor stations that have sprouted in this part of the Marcellus Shale region.

“It’s not the nice rural area it was when I was growing up,” she said.

She said she sold her property to Constitution in May. They were the only interested party, she said, and she was ready to cut ties to the county.

“I really wanted no part of it,” she said. “I’m done with Northeastern Pennsylvania.”

Chris Stockton, a Williams spokesman, would not say what percentage of easements for the pipeline’s proposed route Constitution has already acquired from landowners. He did say 90 percent of the route has been surveyed.

Constitution still has plenty of work to do before it receives the final nod from FERC and other agencies. The commission’s analysis and recommendation span 464 pages, available on FERC’s eLibrary under the docket number CP13-499 or on thetimes-tribune.com.

Police: Man used son as shield against pepper spray

Police charged a Scranton man with using his son as a human shield Thursday to ward off an officer’s pepper spray.

Taron Boddie, 35, 420 Genet St., argued with Scranton School District employees at South Scranton Intermediate because Mr. Boddie did not bring identification with him to check his child out of school for an appointment, according to a criminal complaint. His other son was with him.

Patrolman Joseph Kearney was dispatched to the school, and the officer told Mr. Boddie the child could be released to him if he got his identification.

Mr. Boddie kept screaming and put his hands on Patrolman Kearney’s chest. Mr. Boddie was placed under arrest at that point.

Patrolman Kearney tried to put him in handcuffs twice while Mr. Boddie tried to walk away. On the last attempt, Mr. Boddie pulled his young son in front of him as Patrolman Kearney took out his pepper spray with an order to Mr. Boddie to put his hands behind his back.

Mr. Boddie picked up his son and used him as a shield to stop the officer from using the pepper spray. It worked, briefly.

School officials responded and managed to take the child away from Mr. Boddie. Patrolman Kearney sprayed Mr. Boddie in the side of the face, and Mr. Boddie tried to run.

More officers responded and took Mr. Boddie into custody.

He was charged with simple assault, harassment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of children.

Mr. Boddie is free on $10,000 unsecured bail, pending a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Sports bar takes vetertans club's place in Dickston City

The former Disabled American Veterans club in Dickson City will get a new life as a sports bar.

Lindsey Mellow, a veteran worker at bars and restaurants, hopes to open the Happy Valley Sports Bar in December.

For now, the building at 516 Storrs St. is being gutted and renovated. The building was purchased by RDM Realty LLC, an entity headed by Richard Mellow, Miss Mellow’s father and an electrical contractor, for $190,000 in August, according to Lackawanna County Court documents. Miss Mellow will own the business and lease the space.

She settled on the site after spending months visiting several existing bars and restaurants on the market. She was drawn to the DAV building because it offers a main bar area with seating for about 50 to 60 and a large back hall that can seat as many as 200 and host live entertainment or community events. She viewed that as the best of both worlds — a cozy bar with a larger space for special events or large crowds.

While work has just begun, she said the look will be modern with plenty of large-screen televisions.

The Penn State University alumna, who majored in business management and marketing, said that despite the bar’s name, the décor would not be exclusive to Penn State or football. She said the bar will celebrate all sports, but with a focus on Pennsylvania teams.

The menu will feature conventional pub fare, such as burgers, pizza, quesadillas and wings, but with an upscale twist. The bar will feature craft beers and a martini menu.

She cited the closure of Whistles in Scranton, a local sports bar she enjoyed, and since then she has seen an opening. Miss Mellow, 31, may be a familiar face to those on Scranton-area bar tours, having worked at Tink’s, Diskin’s Saloon and the Oak Street Express.

As an owner-manager, she expects to be on site six days a week.

“Every day we are open, you will see me at my bar,” she said. “I don’t mind, because I love the business.”

Scranton seeks gaming grants to aid downtown landmarks

$

Scranton is seeking more than $5 million in state gaming grants to renovate four downtown landmarks.

The grants are available under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, and the city acts as a sponsoring, pass-through agency for them. While there’s no guarantee the grants will come through next year, it can’t hurt to submit them into the gaming-grant pipeline, city council President Bob McGoff said.

Council approved two of the grant applications Thursday and the other two on Oct. 16, including:

• $2.5 million on behalf of the Radisson at Lackawanna Station hotel on Lackawanna Avenue, for renovations to the masonry facade, guest rooms, windows, train shed and HVAC/mechanical systems of the hotel, which had been a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad train station.

• $1,017,975 on behalf of the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple for building repairs, including a three-phase roof, water-damage and limestone restoration project.

• $1 million on behalf of Lackawanna College for renovating a newly acquired six-story building at 401 Adams Ave., including installation of fire, phone and security system with camera and swipe access, fiber-optic cables and exterior improvements.

• $615,000 on behalf of Scranton-LTI LP for the “Leonard Theater Adams Avenue Project,” for elevator and disabled-accessible upgrades.

Gaming grants are competitive such that “requests will exceed (available) amounts by a hundredfold,” said Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce President Robert Durkin.

The city is eligible to apply for gaming grants because Lackawanna County is contiguous to Monroe County, site of Mount Airy Casino Resort, Mr. Durkin said.

The city’s four grant applications reflect positive developments with key properties downtown, and each one serves as a “crucible for economic development,” Mr. Durkin said.

“The Radisson has for several decades now been an iconic center of activity for Scranton and Lackawanna County,” Mr. Durkin said. “It allows us to show people outside the region and in the community a glimpse of our illustrious past. Because of its architecture, it hearkens back to the glory days of railroads in America and this community.”

The Leonard Theater application would fund construction of a disabled-accessible elevator and related improvements. Noting the theater had been vacant for years, Mr. McGoff said of the Leonard project, “I think everyone would be happy to see the completion of this project and make the Leonard Theater a property to be proud of within the city of Scranton.”

Councilman Wayne Evans noted that the Leonard section of the 300 block of Adams Avenue “is sort of our little version of a Greenwich Village, and this (restoration) is going to go a long way to enhance that even more.”

Mr. Durkin added, “Just look at the kind of investment and momentum taking place organically. Good things are happening downtown. Good things are happening in the city.”

Bars settle with family for serving man later killed in DUI

On the night of Feb. 4, 2010, Thomas Speicher had too much to drink.

During his drunken drive home early the next morning, he was thrown from his Jeep and killed in a one-car crash in Carbondale.

Now the bars where he was drinking that night have agreed to pay a settlement of more than $100,000 to his widow and son and their attorneys.

Anthony J. Piazza III, one of those lawyers, called it an “unfortunate situation” and said the establishments broke the law by serving the 29-year-old Blakely man while he was visibly intoxicated.

The businesses knew or should have known Mr. Speicher was drunk and unable to drive when he left, according to the lawsuit.

Valley Bowling Lanes Inc., Carbondale Twp.; Chico’s Lounge Inc., Mayfield; Champion’s Lounge Inc., Carbondale Twp.; and Bowl Credit Inc., Carbondale Twp., will pay out $103,000 to Melissa M. Speicher and her son. She filed a lawsuit seeking an amount in excess of $50,000 plus interest and other court costs as well as punitive damages.

After paying lawyer’s fees, the Speicher family will take home about $55,500.

The settlement was finalized Oct. 9.

Attempts to reach the defendants’ attorneys were unsuccessful.

Squatch Sauce, brewed in Carbondale, hits shelves this week

$

After getting bored with the monotony of pizza and hoagies every day for lunch, a mysterious “anything” sauce was born.

Squatch Sauce, created by Jeff Zaykowski and Greg Kopa, was made to spice up boring lunches at their tech company, SWG Inc., in the Mid Valley Industrial Park.

Without revealing too much about the ingredients, Mr. Zaykowski said it has a tomato base and is flavored with pepper and many other spices. The mystery of the taste is also where the sauce gets it name — from the legendary Sasquatch.

“It’s an elusive kind of taste,” he said.

The brown sauce first appeared at Coal Cracker Smoke & Stoke BBQ at Montage Mountain and received rave reviews. Combined with heavy online orders from their website, squatchsauce.com, they decided to try selling the sauce in supermarkets.

On Wednesday, Mr. Zaykowski said they inked a deal with Thomas’ Family Markets, which has several locations in Luzerne County. The sauce will be available in stores starting this week.

The sauce is brewed at the Carbondale Technology Transfer Center Kitchen Incubator.

“If you put it on chicken sometimes it tastes spicy and if you put it on pizza it’s sweeter,” Mr. Zaykowski said.

Mr. Kopa and Mr. Zaykowski own SWG Inc. The company buys, sells and repairs high-tech telecommunications equipment.

The SWG Inc. crew started dumping the sauce on pizza, then wings, then pork and then everything. The sauce has grown both local and national attention.

“We had inquiries because the sauce itself is healthy and flavorful,” Mr. Zaykowski said.

The condiment is soy free, peanut free and gluten free.

Mr. Zaykowski and Mr. Kopa are both Lackawanna locals. Mr. Zaykowski’s family has lived in Old Forge for 100 years. He now resides in Dallas. Mr. Kopa is from Carbondale and lives in Greenfield Twp.

Mr. Kopa’s Upvalley upbringing connected the sauce to Steve and Irene’s Hoagies in Mayfield.

It was through mutual friends of Mr. Kopa that the restaurant heard about the sauce.

“We wanted to try it and help them out,” said owner Steve Archer. “People love it.”

Steve and Irene’s tried it on hoagies and cheesesteaks before settling on “squatch wings.”

“We sell a ton of it,” he said, with orders as far as Tobyhanna.

Zombies rise on Scranton street, then dance in attempt to break a record

$

Nearly 200 people lay like the dead along North Washington Avenue.

Their jeans and tights were ripped. Red stains blotted their shirts. Many of their faces were ghostly white. They were dead set on breaking a record for the largest number of people simultaneously dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright looked on and started to count down from five. When he got to “one,” someone from the sidewalk shouted: “Zombies! Rise!”

On Saturday, the 200 people who danced to the iconic song in Scranton were among thousands across the world who tried to bring the world record for the largest simultaneous dance to “Thriller” in the event “Thrill the World,” according to Michael Melcher, executive director of the Scranton Cultural Center, which hosted the event. “It covers every single continent,” Mr. Melcher said.

Scranton wasn’t the only city in Pennsylvania to have zombies dancing in the streets Saturday. Harrisburg also hosted a “Thrill the World” event.

The current record is 22,923 participants in 204 cities in 33 countries, Cultural Center spokeswoman Rachel Frondutti said. It will take some time to tally the total from Saturday’s global event.

“There’s a lot of life out here for it being full of zombies,” she said.

In addition to trying to break the world record, the events around the world raised money for different causes. Scranton’s event raised about $5,000 for the center’s Matthew Flynn Memorial Scholarship Fund, which supports the center’s Creative and Performing Arts Academy.

Deb Gondella was determined to dance Saturday, even after she hurt her back working in the yard earlier in the day. The 61-year-old Scrantonian had been practicing for a month, sacrificing lunch breaks at work to perfect her dance moves despite awkward looks from co-workers.

She didn’t want to let down her niece, 28-year-old Desyre Chilipko, a dance instructor who came to the event dressed as an undead prom queen. So Ms. Gondella painted her face, donned pajamas and pinned a plastic heart to her chest. “I guess I was bitten in my sleep,” she joked.

In the end, Ms. Gondella was happy she went through with it.

Though Mr. Courtright did not dress up like a zombie or dance to “Thriller,” he was excited the large turnout might mean big business for downtown establishments. After the dance, participants were invited to join in a “Zombie Crawl” of several Scranton bars and restaurants, which offered special deals for dancers.

Ms. Gondella figured a beer downtown would help her with her back pain. Others stocked up on hot dogs, popcorn and apple cider.

Brains were not on the menu.

Tobyhanna Army Depot builds tower to test weapon system

A tower under construction at the Tobyhanna Army Depot will help test cutting-edge military equipment that uses lasers, satellites and GPS to mark targets.

The $1.2 million project is supposed to simulate different elevations a soldier may encounter. The view from the 70-foot tower is awe-inspiring — and the terrain is perfect for testing the system, offering an 11-mile view.

The addition adds a new capability for Tobyhanna Army Depot’s support of military communications and electronics equipment.

John Pike, a military analyst with GlobalSecurity.org, described the Long-Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System as a combination of infrared night vision goggles, a television camera and a telescope. It has become an valued asset on the battlefield.

“You have scouts out there and you want them to be able to see what is going on and react to it,” he said.

The system has been around since 2001 and is usually mounted on Humvee and allows soldiers to detect, recognize and identify distant targets. It can also tag them with a laser. The tag may be read by a communication system that pinpoints the location of the target on the globe, then sends those coordinates to weapons to neutralize the target. Or a weapon can fix directly on the laser, Mr. Pike said.

“These days the military has two types of precision-guided munitions, one using GPS, often used in bad weather, and a laser guided system where the weapon hones in on laser dot,” he said.

Justin Eimers, a spokesman for the depot, said the work on the tower should wrap up this month. The depot is funded to service and overhaul 138 LRAS3 systems in the current fiscal year, which equates to 9,800 hours of labor.

While the tower was designed to offer line of sight of 11.5 miles, the range of the LRAS3 is confidential, depot officials said.

Mr. Pike said there isn’t much need for a greater distance. He said the capabilities of the laser system have been improving over the years and 11½ miles may be the useful limit of the device simply because it’s so difficult to find a line of sight that long in the field.

The LRAS3 replaced systems that require scouts to be much closer, within direct fire range, of the threat they seek to detect.

Local History: Roosevelt delivers stern speech about flip-flopping politicians

Nearly a century before U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry was famously accused of “flip-floppping” his stance on the Iraq war and myriad other issues, former President Theodore Roosevelt denounced a U.S. congressman from Scranton for changing his political stripes.

The former president appeared at the Thirteenth Regiment Armory in Scranton on Oct. 28, 1914. He arrived at the Hudson and Delaware station from Wilkes-Barre around 7:20 p.m. A Scranton Times article on Oct. 29 reported that Col. Roosevelt was dining when the train arrived in Scranton, “and there was a delay of a few minutes before the parade to the armory could get under way.” Eventually, though, “a committee of Roosevelt men from Lackawanna and Luzerne counties” and a band escorted Col. Roosevelt to the Myrtle Street entrance of the armory, which is more commonly known these days as the Watres Armory.

A crowd of at least 8,000 were waiting to hear the former president speak. Joining him on the stage were Gifford Pinchot, who was running for a U.S. Senate seat, and William Draper Lewis, who had recently withdrawn from the Pennsylvania gubernatorial race.

The national leader of the Progressive party spoke for about 55 minutes, delivering what the Times called a “corking good political speech” that “bitterly denounced” Philadelphia politician Boies Penrose , a U.S. senator and political power broker in the national Republican committee .

“Now friends, I have come here to Pennsylvania because I feel that the contest you have on this fall is more important than the contest in any other state of the Union, for there is no other man now running for office who so exceptionally symbolizes every force against which decent citizens rebel as does Boies Penrose,” Col. Roosevelt said.

He later invoked the name of Abraham Lincoln, urging the armory audience to be “loyal to the principals of Abraham Lincoln, and you cannot be loyal to those principles unless you repudiate Penrose and all for which Penrose stands.”

Mr. Penrose wasn’t Col. Roosevelt’s only target. The former president also attacked John R. Farr — a former Scranton School Board member and, in 1914, a Washington party candidate seeking re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Though the former president did not mention the congressman by name, the Times reported that Col. Roosevelt certainly was talking about Mr. Farr when he said, “If there is any man who before election promises one thing and after election does another, he is not entitled to any mercy at your hands.”

In the Oct. 29, 1914, article, the Times reported that Mr. Farr “only recently flopped from the Washington party to the Republican column,” after giving a speech at the armory in 1912 “that he was a Roosevelt man, and was prepared to die fighting for the Progressive cause.”

Interestingly, Mr. Farr reportedly tried to fend off Col. Roosevelt’s blistering attack in Scranton, the Times reported.

“It is said that he went to Wilkes-Barre and made a vain endeavor to get the Bull Moose leaders there, close personal friends of the local congressman, to call the colonel off, but Roosevelt would not listen to any suggestion like that,” the story reported. “The colonel made it plain that he has little use for men like Farr who blow hot and cold as the occasion calls for.”

Col. Roosevelt endorsed Vance C. McCormick, the Democratic-Washington party nominee for governor, and the rest of the candidates on the Progressive ticket before ending his speech. He did not linger in Scranton, as he was due to give speeches in Tyrone, near State College, and Harrisburg the next day.

But before leaving, the former president praised Scranton, saying “the Progressive spirit, I have long known, has been very strong in Scranton” and he felt sure “the good, decent people of this community will do their full duty toward putting an end to the corrupt state machine.”

Comcast gains amid would-be threats

Comcast shrugs off threat from Internet

Despite news of television channels taking their offerings online, shares of Comcast jumped 7 percent last week to a Friday close of $54.26 per share.

The rise came as the market rebounded from a dismal prior week, but on the backdrop of changes in television and other events.

Earlier this month, HBO and CBS announced plans to offer their channels in other ways that did not include cable. While the announcements excited those eager for a la carte programming that allows viewers to pay for only channels they want, it didn’t fluster Comcast, which sells packages and bundles. Comcast officials said distributing content to consumers via the Internet is difficult, and some analysts agreed, saying such a model would be confusing and a bad deal for consumers.

Meanwhile the company announced strong third-quarter financials, with revenue up 4 percent to $16.8 billion. Adjusted earnings were up 12 percent.

The nation’s largest cable company, Philadelphia-based Comcast is the primary Northeast Pennsylvania cable provider. It also owns cable television channels Bravo and MSNBC and broadcast channel NBC.
