DUNMORE - Two borough teenagers are facing charges in a string of burglaries in the borough after police allegedly caught them in the act early Monday.
A neighbor near the Castle Smoke Shop, 1119 Wheeler Ave., called police after he heard a noise, looked outside and saw a 15-year-old trying to climb through a broken window in the store, police said.
The teen fled when the witness shouted at him. When the man came back outside after calling police, he saw a second teen fleeing the scene as well.
A borough police officer soon had two suspects matching the man's description, the second one a 17-year-old, police said.
Upon questioning at police headquarters, the teens admitted to burglarizing the smoke shop.
Police said the 17-year-old matched descriptions provided in several previous robberies. Police questioned him, and he ultimately admitted to burglarizing Grande Pizza, 301 S. Blakely St.; Gubbio's Restaurant, 411 Chestnut St.; a home at 217 S. Apple St.; and a cellphone store.
The 17-year-old also told police he stole items from several cars with unlocked doors, police said.
He was detained pending approval by the Lackawanna County district attorney's office of charges including burglary, Dunmore Police Chief Pat Reese said. The 15-year-old was allowed to return home with his parents and will be facing charges as well, he said.
