DALTON - Council members Thursday passed on a chance to support the fight against the city of Scranton's proposed commuter tax.
At Thursday night's borough council meeting, a motion to pay $200 to the STOP - Scranton Taxing our People - group checking account died for lack of a second.
Councilwoman Lorraine Daniels made the motion.
"I think we'd be surprised how many people this would help out," Ms. Daniels said. "I'd like to support it."
Other council members voiced their concern about such a donation, saying they want to know more information before submitting it.
"How many residents would we benefit if we did pay this?" Councilman Mark Sujkowski asked. "Would it even be worth it?"
Councilman William Montgomery said he wouldn't mind making the contribution as long as it doesn't mean the borough is committed to providing continual support.
"What kind of commitment are we making here?" Mr. Montgomery asked.
On Oct. 11, the Scranton City Council voted to adopt a proposal that calls for a 1 percent commuter tax on people who work in Scranton but live elsewhere.
A contingent of community officials led by Mayfield Mayor Al Chelik organized STOP to fight the impending tax. Mr. Chelik, who has been vocal in his opposition, has asked each community to donate $200 to fund the legal action.
A panel of three judges will hear Scranton's request on Dec. 10 in Lackawanna County Court.
