One day after a Lake Winola man was fatally shot by police, officials are mum on details about what happened.
Brian Williams, 42, was shot by police outside his home in Wyoming County on Wednesday night when members of the Tunkhannock Twp., Overfield Twp. and Meshoppen police departments and state police at Tunkhannock tried to serve Mr. Williams a mental health warrant.
State police said in a news release Wednesday that an altercation occurred when officers tried to serve him, resulting in Mr. Williams being shot with a stun gun and then with a firearm. Mr. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wyoming County Coroner Thomas Kukuchka, a news release from the Wyoming County district attorney's office said.
Details on the altercation were not available Thursday night.
A release from the district attorney's office said there would be "no further comment until the investigation is completed." State police at Tunkhannock declined to comment Thursday night, and phone calls to Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home were not immediately returned.
According to Mr. Williams' obituary, he was a Mountain Energy truck driver and a member of the Lake Winola Fire Company.
The Rev. Joan Dodson of the Lake Winola United Methodist Church will preside over funeral services on Monday at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home at 11 a.m.
Mr. Williams' grandfather, Frank Williams, was upset to hear what happened. He said he did not get to see his grandson too often, but would see him driving around in his truck every now and then.
"He was a great young fellow," Mr. Williams said Thursday, adding that he did not know details of what happened. "I'm so sorry that these things happen; he was not that old."
Mr. Williams' obituary appears on Page B9.
