Dog wakes up owners, aids man outside

Wrigley is always on alert, so his owners weren't in a hurry to get out of bed early Saturday when the 5-year-old border collie mix wouldn't stop barking.

Kurt and Lara Derr thought the black and white spotted dog just needed to go outside or heard an animal scampering near their Arrowhead Lake home in Monroe County, but when his urgent barks turned to pawing their faces, Mr. Derr finally got up to see what was going on.

What he heard was faint knocking on the door at just after 5 a.m.

Mr. Derr found an older man in sweatpants soaking wet and his face covered in blood. Mr. and Mrs. Derr ushered the stranger inside, getting him blankets and a drink to warm up his blue fingers.

"He kept saying he had fallen in the water," Mrs. Derr said.

Almost immediately after they let the man in, Wrigley stopped barking and hung around, curious to know what was happening.

The Derrs think the man wandered through the wooded area near their home before knocking on the door, and said the unknown man seemed dazed and confused.

They called the security guards for their Arrowhead Lake gated community, who in turn called an ambulance, taking the man for treatment.

Mr. Derr said he would have never gotten up and heard the man's knocking had Wrigley not been barking for his attention.

"He's always on call. He's always making sure everyone's safe," Mr. Derr said about the couple's dog.

The Derrs don't know the stranger's name or his condition, just that he was taken to the hospital by an ambulance from Thornhurst Twp., but they are grateful the persistent and energetic Wrigley didn't stop barking.

"I think we were just really glad that our dog woke us up," Mrs. Derr said.
