Marines celebrate tradition at annual breakfast

Jerry Seiwell's fork clanked against the metal tray Sunday as he scooped up beef gravy on toast, eggs and potatoes, chatting with his wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Cassie.

The authentic "chow" at the Northeastern Detachment Marine Corps League and Museum annual Father's Day SOS Breakfast brought back memories for the Marine, who served from 1994 to 2004. Coming year after year to the breakfast with his family, he's grateful to be spending time with them, instead of apart, like many military members deployed on Father's Day.

"Any Father's Day, Christmas, any day you're away from your family is tough," Mr. Seiwell said.

It was also a chance to show his 16-year-old daughter, who is considering joining the Navy, what she could be eating if she signs up.

That's the whole point of the breakfast, said Commandant Joel Sofranko - for the Marines to pass on their traditions to the next generation, while allowing a chance for old friends to meet up over a meal.

"We wanted to give our kids and people the way it was at boot camp," Mr. Sofranko said.

About 125 people strolled through the doors for the breakfast, the proceeds of which go into upkeep on the downstairs museum, community outreach programs and flag retirement ceremonies the post hosts, Mr. Sofranko said.
