Odor evacuates elementary school
SCRANTON - A suspected gas leak at Whittier Elementary School led to the temporary evacuation of students Friday, Scranton School District Superintendent William King said.
The report was called in when an odor of gas was discovered Friday at 10:05 a.m. in the kitchen of the Orchard Street school.
Scranton fire crews were dispatched to the school, and the children and staff were evacuated to the nearby Nativity School. There was no gas leak. UGI workers discovered an exhaust vent was not turned on at the time and could have caused the odor.
Officials gave the all-clear around 10:30 a.m.
