About 300 people enjoyed a night of food, fun and dancing to raise money for the Northeast Regional Cancer Institutein memory of Judi Hartridge at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple in Scranton on Sunday.
"Judi H Rock On 3" was the third annual fundraiser in memory of the Dunmore resident. Her husband, John, said Sunday's event was the largest turnout so far.
Mr. Hartridge estimated the effort raised $136,000 with matching grants from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in its first two years.
Mrs. Hartridge died from a form of cervical cancer at age 45, and she loved dancing and music - particularly Bruce Springsteen.
"This was a way we could make something good out of something bad," Mr. Hartridge said.
Christine Zavaskas, community relations coordinator for the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, said money raised will go toward education programs, helping underinsured people get cancer screenings, and analyses of cancer trends in the region.
She said cancer risks differ for people, depending on age and family histories, and people should talk with their doctors about the right time to get cancer screenings.
Scranton resdent Michele McGovern, 41, was among attendees who did not know Mrs. Hartridge but admired the effect she had on her loved ones.
"The fact that her family is still dedicated to the cause six years later is a great legacy," Ms. McGovern said.
