Mid Valley board questions elementary project costs

THROOP - An ice maker and an elevator operator raised eyebrows at a Mid Valley School Board special meeting Wednesday.

The board approved an additional $3,149 in change orders for the elementary school construction and renovation project but asked for more information before it approves $1,842 for one day of service from an elevator operator and $2,673 for an ice maker in the nurse staff area.

Board member Donna Dixon questioned a payment "to push buttons to the tune of almost $2,000." She wasn't alone in her concern.

Responding to a question from board member Peter Kolcharno, Superintendent Randy Parry said no one from the district had authorized the service.

The elevator operator was used for one day while furniture was being moved into the Mid Valley Elementary Center, Mr. Parry explained, adding that the professional was required because the elevator was not certified at the time.

Without the operator, moving furniture - and therefore the project - could have been further delayed. The elevator should have been certified 14 days earlier, Mr. Parry continued.

"If the project was on time, that wouldn't be an issue," Mr. Kolcharno noted.

An ice maker in the nurse staff area also raised discussion about what was originally ordered and whether a refrigerator designated for the space had the capability of making ice.

Ms. Dixon questioned why a refrigerator without that function would have been purchased for the space.

In other business, the board approved Kim Yencho as head varsity girls basketball coach, effective today.

Elementary Principal Carlos Lopez also explained that he hoped to hold an open house at the elementary school in November.
