SCOTT TWP. - Long-anticipated repairs to 33 township roads either deteriorating with age or torn up from a massive sewer project should start within two weeks, officials said.

Scott Twp. supervisors on Thursday awarded the reconstruction and road paving contract to Eastern Industries Inc., at a price of $959,897.31 - thousands less than the township engineer expected it would cost.

The project calls for the resurfacing, reconstruction or paving of 33 township roads. Most of them haven't been touched in 15 to 18 years, at least five years overdue, supervisor David Makala said.

The majority of the project will be funded by a $1.1 million loan the township was awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

As part of its agreement with the township, the Scott Twp. Sewer Authority will also pay an estimated $340,000 to repair road trenches damaged during the construction of the $23.8 million sewer project.

"This is the largest road upgrade project ever in the history of the township," Supervisor and sewer authority member Michael Giannetta said.

Using the leftover loan money, supervisors say they hope to address as many as eight more roads, including the one at the Joe Terry Civic Center.

There is no set date for completion as it depends on how many crews are available, Mr. Makala said. But he said it's likely the project will be done within three months, definitely before the winter.
