Times-Shamrock newspapers continue to collect statewide journalism honors, earning 13 awards in The Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors News Excellence competition.
The latest honors include a first-place spot news award for The Times-Tribune's coverage of Superstorm Sandy and a first-place public service award for The Citizens' Voice.
The Times-Tribune won five PAPME awards, including:
- Staff, first place, for Spot News Reporting, "Superstorm Sandy."
- Jason Farmer, first place, for Sports Feature Photo, "West Scranton Fans."
- Staff, second place, for Online Coverage of Breaking News, "Superstorm Sandy."
- Donnie Collins and Scott Walsh, for Sports Feature Reporting, "Master Mentor."
- Butch Comegys, second place, for Feature Photo, "Wild Hair Day."
The Citizens' Voice earned eight awards, including:
- Jonathan Bombulie, first place, for blogging, "Penguins Insider."
- Jonathan Bombulie, first place, for Sports/Outdoors column, "Only in America."
- Dave Janoski, first place, for editorial writing, "Yet another very simple coincidence."
- Staff, first place, for Public Service by a Newspaper, "Building Bridges."
- Staff, first place, for Sports Feature Reporting, "Top 25 Teams."
- Dave Janoski and Shannon Zimmerman, second-place, for Public Service by a Newspaper, "Citizens' Toolkit."
- Michael Sisak, second place, for Online Coverage of Breaking News, "Paterno."
- Staff, second place, for General News Reporting, "Winstead Shooting/Building Bridges."
A team of editors from the New York daily newspapers judged this year's contest.
The PAPME awards will be distributed on Friday, May 17, in Harrisburg.
