Eight families were displaced after the odor of fuel was detected and gas discovered flowing through the sewer system in Throop late Monday.

Lackawanna County Emergency Management and Throop police and firefighters evacuated people as crews set up in the PNC Bank parking lot, 224 Dunmore St., through Tuesday morning. The odor, reportedly of gasoline, appeared to be coming from the sewers.

After the command center and a Red Cross evacuation center closed and the families returned to their homes, emergency crews were called back to the bank for a gas smell at about 8:50 a.m.

Borough Fire Chief Eric Hartshorn said the gas fumes in PNC were most likely residual fumes from Monday, and fans were placed inside to air out the building.

Chief Hartshorn said the borough would continue to monitor manholes, homes and buildings for gas levels, as they have still not found the source of the gas odor.
