75 years ago, two taxpayer associations in Scranton expressed opposing viewpoints on a possible tax strike if the Scranton School Board were to raise taxes in the 1938-39 budget. The Scranton Taxpayers' Association opposed the strike; the Home Owners and Taxpayers League endorsed it.
50 years ago, W.L. Maxson Electronic in Old Forge was awarded an $8.7 million Navy contract to build Bullpup guided missiles. A spokesman said the contract would enable the plant, which had 135 employees, to increase its workforce by 50 percent.
25 years ago, Scranton City Council was split on a redevelopment agreement between the city and the downtown mall developers because of a provision that the city cover $8 million to purchase property.
10 years ago, a train derailed in Plains Twp. Several cars were carrying hazardous materials. Nearby residents were voluntarily evacuated.
