Suspected bullet leads to search
SCRANTON - Students at West Scranton High School were searched Tuesday morning after a suspected bullet was found last week.
The round, which Scranton police determined Tuesday to be a blank from a starter pistol, was found by maintenance after school on Friday, Superintendent William King said. Starter pistols are used to start races.
Although police let the district know Tuesday morning that the round was from a starter pistol, administrators decided to go through with the search. A few lighters, but no weapons, were found, Mr. King said.
Tuesday was the first time students had been in school since the blank was found because Monday was a holiday.
School officials do not know where the blank came from, but several staff members are PIAA-certified track officials, who may have a starter pistol, Mr. King said.
Students were given letters Tuesday to give to their parents that explain why the search was conducted, he said.
