Carbondale

Sherry Sparks became an artist when she was 11 years old.

She struggled for years to have her paintings and photography displayed in a gallery, which she admitted was tough without the right money or connections.

Now 58, she is helping artists in the Carbondale area jump that hurdle.

"My idea is to work with people who haven't had that chance," she said.

She will host the Carbondale Project - Through the Lens, a gallery reception in the foyer of the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce building from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday.

The pictures and paintings will display images of the Carbondale area, Ms. Sparks said.

"We have so much talent locally. ... I'm trying to promote that," she said.

Old Forge

Riverside and Old Forge teachers will be teaming up on the court to take on a formidable rival: the Harlem Wizards.

On Sunday, Feb. 17, the Old Forge Elementary Parent Teacher Association will host the basketball team in the Old Forge High School gym from 6 to 8 p.m., PTA President Sherri Wagner said.

"The Wizards are known for their comedy, ball tricks and wild dunks not seen in (NBA) games," Ms. Wagner said.

One of the players will visit the high school gym to promote the event and entertain students from kindergarten through sixth grade on Tuesday, she added.

Olyphant

When members of SS. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church finish preparing eggs for Easter, they don't get hidden in the yard.

Their traditional pysanky eggs are crafted with wax, a stylus and dye.

The finished products are works of art.

The Olyphant church will hold pysanky-making classes on Sundays, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, at the parish hall. Classes, which cost $15 per person and include supplies, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.

Only one class is required.

It will be the third year the classes are held, organizer Lauren Telep said.

"This has been passed on from generation to generation to generation," she said of the skill. "We just want to keep it going. There are many parishioners who are bringing their grandchildren."
