Former President Jimmy Carter is coming to Luzerne County.
The 39th president will give a free speech at the Wyoming Monument during the last week in May, Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer said. Mr. Carter, 88, will be accompanied on his visit to the area by his wife, Rosalynn.
"We hope it will give hundreds if not thousands of people the opportunity to see a former president right in their own backyard in Wyoming," Mr. Boyer said.
The Carters are friends with Larry and Diane Cook of Plains Twp.
The Cooks contacted the mayor and Marcella Starr, the president of the Wyoming Monument Association, to ask if they wouldn't mind a former president stopping by.
Also planned are a paid mix-and-mingle event, the chance to buy Mr. Carter's novel, "The Hornet's Nest," and a dinner at the Stegmaier mansion.
Mr. Carter will be the third president to visit the memorial to victims of a local Revolutionary War battle, Ms. Starr said. Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president, and Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, also visited the monument.
After visits from those presidents in each of the past two centuries, "we thought it would be a good thing to have a third president there for the 21st century," said Larry Cook.
The borough will announce more details about the presidential visit Thursday.
