HARRISBURG - Incoming state Attorney General Kathleen Kane is scheduled to take the oath of office Tuesday at the Capitol to start her four-year term.

Mrs. Kane's public swearing-in is set for 2 p.m. in the main Rotunda. Officials are asking that guests arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. for security purposes.

An invitation-only inaugural reception for Mrs. Kane will follow at 3 at the Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg.

Mrs. Kane, of Waverly Twp., becomes the first Democrat and woman to serve as attorney general since it became an elective office in 1980. As attorney general, Mrs. Kane will be the state's chief law enforcement officer. She will direct statewide and multi-county grand juries and oversee special units to investigate environmental crimes, Medicaid fraud and insurance fraud, according to The Pennsylvania Manual.

The attorney general enforces consumer protection laws and reviews state agency contracts for legality.

Separate inaugural ceremonies are scheduled Tuesday in the Capitol Complex for two other state officeholders.

Democrat Eugene DePasquale of York will be sworn in as auditor general. Democrat Rob McCord of Montgomery County will be sworn in for a second term as treasurer.
