A federal inmate at a Wayne County prison died Friday morning after a fight with another inmate.
Ephraim Goitom, 29, was pronounced dead at Wayne Memorial Hospital at 10:58 a.m., roughly an hour after the fight in a housing unit at the U.S. Penitentiary in Canaan Twp., prison spokeswoman Kim Straesser said.
Staff responded to the fight and separated the inmates, she said. The second inmate, who has not been identified, was treated for minor injuries. No other inmates or staff members were injured.
The cause of Mr. Goitom's death and most details about the fight are not being released as the FBI investigates the incident, she said. The prison will remain on lockdown during the investigation.
The Wayne County coroner has ordered a forensic autopsy, but it had not been scheduled Friday afternoon.
Mr. Goitom was imprisoned on drug and weapons charges after he shot and wounded a Stamford, Conn., police officer during a raid on his home in December 2010. He was sentenced in July to a 25-year term and was expected to be released in 2032.
