Property owned by the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County may soon hit the auction block.
Members of the center's joint operating committee are considering holding a public auction for 62 acres behind the school. Proceeds from the sale of the property, which has already been subdivided, would go back to the districts in the center's consortium.
The property, zoned residential, is off Rockwell Avenue in North Scranton and has been appraised at $725,000, Administrative Director Vincent Nallo said at the board's Thursday meeting. Before the property was subdivided, the center kept 32 acres closest to the building for possible expansion.
Also at Thursday's meeting, drafting and design technology instructor James Burden encouraged the board to not end the program after this school year. Mr. Burden said he has worked to provide his students with a pre-engineering curriculum, which is needed in the current job market. The program, already in half-time status, has six students. Officials blame low enrollment for closing it.
During the board's reorganization portion of the meeting, William Burke, North Pocono's representative, was elected chairman. Thomas Evans of Lakeland was elected vice chairman, Marcella Kaczmarcik of Carbondale, secretary, and Dunmore's John Farris, treasurer.
Attorney Mark Walsh was named solicitor, with a $1,500 monthly retainer for general legal services.
