Wilkes-Barre police issued a “scam alert” after four men posing as utility workers conned an elderly woman and stole a safe from her home on Wednesday.

The woman was approached by four men outside her Scott Street home at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said in a news release. The men told the woman they were from “the water company” and needed to check out a problem at her home.

Once the woman let the men inside the house, one of the men distracted her. Another man distracted other people in the home while the other two alleged utility workers went upstairs to check on the supposed problem, police said.

A few minutes later, the two men came downstairs and all four men left the home, according to police. The woman discovered that a small safe containing $400 in cash and important documents was missing from the second floor of her home, police said.

The suspects are described as clean-shaven, with dark complexions. One of them wore a white plaid shirt and blue jeans. The men might have driven off in a white pickup truck, police said.
