SCOTT TWP. — Lakeland High is undergoing renovations, but “no physical change will ever take away the memories that these walls hold for us,” salutatorian Jacqueline Amanda “Mandy” Jadick told her classmates during the school’s 55th commencement exercises on Tuesday night.
Red, white and blue balloons decorated the stage as members of the senior class stopped in twos on stage for their family members and friends to snap pictures. In her speech, Mandy challenged her classmates to “be the class that sticks together like the family we are.”
“Once a Chief, always a Chief,” she said.
Valedictorian Morgan Sedorovitz said the class of 2014 might be small, but “it does not lack any extraordinary talents or characteristics.”
“Everyone on this stage is destined to do great things in their futures,” she said.
Mayfield mayor and 1960 graduate of Lakeland, Alexander Chelik, was chosen by the senior class as its speaker.
The former history teacher and retired principal faced the graduating seniors as he apologized for his generation and the generation after him for leaving the class with “a whole mess of problems.”
He commented on the distress in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, recent school shootings, economic problems and even Hannah Montana turning into Miley Cyrus, which drew laughs from students.
But he also offered them some wisdom, using the story of Noah’s Ark to guide his ship of advice home.
“Don’t miss the boat,” he told the class.
Mr. Chelik also told the class to remember the knowledge and skills they learned at Lakeland to solve any problem.
“No matter how violent the storm, have faith,” he said.
