Hit-and-run suspect Thomas Letteer Jr. pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to charges related a December 2012 crash that killed a 5-year-old boy in Wilkes-Barre.

Letteer pleaded guilty to fleeing the scene of a fatal accident, a charge formally known as accidents involving death or personal injury.

The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison.

Wilkes-Barre police charged Letteer last April on allegations he fatally struck 5-year-old Kevin Miller on North Street in Wilkes-Barre and then fled the scene. Miller was crossing the street with his parents and brothers after leaving a Christmas party on Dec. 21, 2012.

Until now, Letteer has denied involvement in the crash.

The guilty plea followed a recent ruling by a judge that dealt a blow to Letteer’s defense. Two days after the crash, police interviewed Letteer outside his Plains Township home. At the time, police were interviewing various people with a red Pontiac Grand Am, the type of vehicle police said had struck the boy.

According to prosecutors, Letteer, 23, told officers he was at a party in West Wyoming the night Miller was fatally struck and went directly to his girlfriend’s house in Pittston Township. He said he was not in Wilkes-Barre that night and “never travels to Wilkes-Barre,” police said.

The statements were important, prosecutors said, because they contradict facts later learned.

Authorities were told Letteer was en route to a downtown Wilkes-Barre bar around the time of the crash. They say they also obtained evidence his cellphone was used in the area of the crash scene around the time the boy was killed.

Letteer’s attorneys had argued the statements should be suppressed because Letteer was not read his Miranda warnings. Prosecutors countered that no Miranda warning was necessary because Letteer was “not a suspect, nor was he subjected to custodial interrogation.” prosecutors said.
