The former Holy Redeemer High School football coach who pleaded guilty in a far-ranging federal  “sextortion” case was hit today with new state charges alleging he molested a 13-year-old boy in the school’s locker room.

Joseph James Ostrowski, 29, of 76 Vulcan St., is now charged with indecent assault on a person under 16, corruption of minors and photographing a child sex act. The conduct with the football player allegedly happened last spring. It is the first time Ostrowski has been accused of physically molesting a student.

The student told investigators he would go weight-lifting after school three times a week, according to an affidavit filed in court jointly by state police and Luzerne County detectives.

Ostrowski asked the boy to go to the coach’s locker room on the second floor during lifting one day to be fitted for a new football girdle, according to the charges. The player reported that Ostrowski locked the door of the locker room once he arrived and began fondling him. He also took nude photos of the student with a cellphone, the affidavit says.

Investigators said Ostrowski admitted in a subsequent interview to molesting the boy and taking nude photos of him with his iPhone, which he deleted several days later.

Ostrowski remains in federal custody as he awaits sentencing on child porn charges in a case prosecutors said involved the “sextortion” of children in at least 14 states.

Prosecutors alleged that Ostrowski, a former stand-out football player at Meyers High School, used fake identities as he prowled the Internet in search of underage victims. He would often pose as a student or alumni who was involved in the same sport as his victims, convincing them to send him pornographic images of themselves as a “hazing ritual,” according to prosecutors.

The images he received included children in various states of undress and performing sexual acts. Once he had pictures and videos from a victim, Ostrowski would threaten to release them if they didn’t send him more, according to prosecutors.

The Diocese of Scranton suspended Ostrowski and appointed a new head coach after federal agents arrested him in the school’s weight room last year.

Ostrowski reached a plea deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to charges of producing child pornography, interstate extortion and cyber stalking in January. under the agreement, prosecutors will recommend Ostrowski serve 25 years in federal prison.

A sentencing date has not been set.
