A report of rowdy people huffing from an aerosol can Tuesday night led Wilkes-Barre police to uncover a cache of stolen property, according to court documents.

Police were called to the area of North Meade Street and New Market Street about 11:05 p.m. Tuesday for a report of three people huffing from a can and shouting in the street.

Officers arrived to find three men with skateboards standing in the road wearing dark hoodies. They found Michael A. Kostelnick, 20, of Plains Township in possession of a 12-ounce aerosol can of Ultra Duster, a compressed air duster, according to police. Officers asked Kostelnick, whose nose was red and inflamed, if he had any other aerosol cans and he indicated he did not, saying, “You can check,” according to a police affidavit.

Officers searched his backpack and did not find any aerosol cans, but did find a PlayStation 3 game in a plastic security case and seven DVDs in their original wrapping, according to the affidavit. Also in Kostelnick’s possession were two packs of hot dogs, two Starbucks drinks, Light Bars, and a T-shirt, police said.

Police contacted officials at Walmart and confirmed the property, with a combined value of $145, had been stolen.

Kostelnick was charged with possessing stolen property, possessing a solvent to release toxic vapors, inhaling toxic-releasing substances and public drunkenness, according to court records.

Police sought to have Kostelnick’s mother pick him up, but she told officers he does not live at the home. Kostelnick was instead booked at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility with bail set at $10,000.
