Senator takes lead in gala

The third annual Marley's Mission Blue Ribbon Gala will feature newly re-elected U.S. Sen. Bob Casey among its leaders. Mr. Casey will serve as an honorary chairman with Kathleen Bolling Bell and Gretchen Wintermantel, who are spearheading the event's planning.

The gala is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 11 p.m., at the Hilton Scranton and Conference Center. The theme of this year's gala is "Building Our Future."

Marley's Mission uses equine therapy to help children and families who have experienced trauma. Often, children who visit the Mission have been traumatized by abuse or neglect.

Officers installed

Amy Lloyd has been installed as president of the Scranton Women Teacher's Club.

Other officers installed with her during a dinner at the Glen Oak Country Club were Marci Barnansky, corresponding secretary; Elizabeth DeFrancesco, past president/first vice president; Megan Duffy, second vice president; Nanine Gramigna, president elect; Susie Miller, third vice president; Marian Poveromo, recording secretary; and Teresa Roche, treasurer.

The teachers will be in office for the 2012-2014 school years.

High notes

Two Lakeland students will celebrate a day in their honor in December.

Dalton Mountcastle and Alejandro Soto rescued Jermyn resident Stanley Venosh after his shirt caught fire from a wall-mounted space heater on Dec. 23, saving his life.

In honor of their heroic feat, Lackawanna County Commissioners Corey O'Brien, James Wansacz and Patrick O'Malley have declared Dec. 23 Alejandro Soto and Dalton Mountcastle Day.
