An 18-month-old child was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after being dropped into a storm drain just outside a Dunmore home Saturday night.
Dunmore police received a call about 9:30 p.m. from a mother whose child had slipped out of her boyfriend's hands and dropped approximately 5 feet into a storm drain near 1529 Monroe Ave., borough Police Chief Pat Reese said.
Upon arriving at the scene, an officer tried squeezing his body into the drain. Despite making it halfway down, he couldn't reach the child.
Dunmore firefighters used the Jaws of Life to "open the concrete barrier" and retrieve the child, who, at that point, was unconscious, police said.
The child was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Chief Reese said the child was still in critical condition Sunday afternoon, though he wouldn't release the child's name.
Without that information, a hospital spokeswoman said she couldn't provide an update on the child's condition.
Chief Reese said police are investigating, though no charges have been filed.
