In Scranton, no intention of changing police chief status

Three months after the city's top cop stepped down, Scranton's leaders have made no move to name a permanent chief.

Mayor Chris Doherty said the transition from former Police Chief Dan Duffy to acting Police Chief Carl Graziano has been a smooth one, and there is no need to change anything at this point.

The acting chief's salary is $81,073, about the same pay the former chief earned.

Chief Graziano, who took over when Mr. Duffy stepped down to become director of the Lackawanna College Police Academy in July, holds the title, workload and the respect of his department, Mr. Doherty said.

With the Police Department in a stable place, city officials can focus all their efforts on Scranton's financial woes.

"Right now, we're just focused on the finances," Mr. Doherty said. "Anyone who knows Carl, he does a great job."

Councilman Jack Loscombe, city council's public safety chairman, said, "As far as I know, they (the administration) haven't made any movements" to name a new chief.

"Right now, it's working to the best advantage of Carl and the city" to continue to having an acting chief, Mr. Loscombe said.

Chief Graziano said no one has approached him about the issue, adding that he and the department are focused on implementing new and successful initiatives throughout the city.
