(AP) — Penn State president Rodney Erickson says the university can help in the recovery process for child sex abuse survivors through teaching, research and service.

He has outlined ways Monday of how the school is reaching out at the school's inaugural conference on child sexual abuse.

Erickson says the origins of the conference go back a year, after the arrest of retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on abuse charges plunged Penn State into scandal.

Erickson says the conference is one way the school is moving forward, and that it's time to tackle what he calls an "insidious" epidemic issue.

Experts say cases of abuse are underreported.

Retired boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard is the featured speaker later Monday, the first full day of the conference. Leonard is an abuse survivor.
