Marriage license applications online

SCRANTON - Prospective newlyweds in Lackawanna County can now apply for a marriage license online.

Applications can be accessed on the Marriage License Bureau page on the county website, www.lacka wannacounty.org.

Register of Wills Linda Munley, who oversees the bureau, said she expects the online system to make applying for a license more convenient for the public. Couples who apply online will still have to visit the bureau office to pay the $55 fee and sign paperwork.

Lackawanna is the second county in Pennsylvania to offer online applications.

W-B jury awards $3.1M in lawsuit

WILKES-BARRE - A Luzerne County jury Thursday awarded more than $3 million in damages to the family of a developmentally disabled woman who died after workers at a group home failed to get her timely treatment for injuries she suffered in a car crash.

According to the lawsuit, Barbara Maines of Berwick suffered a liver laceration when the Hope Enterprises van she was riding in slammed into another vehicle in a Bloomsburg parking lot on Sept. 8, 2009.

The next day, around 12:30 p.m., Ms. Maines was admitted to Geisinger Medical Center Outpatient Clinic in Danville for a regularly scheduled visit. Three hours later, doctors transferred her to the emergency room after she become unstable.
