Four people want to be the next member of the Scranton School Board and help make decisions that could include whether to close city schools or eliminate the preschool program.
The successful candidate will fill the remaining 23 months of Mark McAndrew’s term. McAndrew resigned earlier this month before taking his seat on Scranton City Council.
Candidates are:
Stephanie Davis of Bulwer Street, an administrative assistant and mother of three children in the district. Davis also applied for the last appointment, saying that she wanted to make sure her children and their peers had opportunities to succeed.
Dorothy Grill of Clearview Street, a young adult instructor/career counselor at ResCare Workforce Services and adjunct instructor at Lackawanna College, who holds a doctorate in organizational leadership from Marywood University.
James Malloy of Taylor Avenue, a senior trial attorney at Selective Insurance Co. of America.
Sean McAndrew of North Garfield Avenue, a former candidate for Scranton city controller and previous president of the Scranton Municipal Recreation Authority, who is a sales and customer
service manager for ComServe Systems. He is the nephew of Mark McAndrew.
This will be the second time this month that the board has filled a vacancy. Directors appointed Gretchen Welby, academic director for the physician assistant program at Marywood University, to fill Tom Schuster’s two-year term. He won both two-year and four-year seats in November and resigned from the two-year position.
Two other candidates from earlier this month — Diana Harris and Joseph Albert — pulled their names from consideration for this round.
“I think we have a great slate,” President Katie Gilmartin said. “We are lucky there are people willing to step forward at a time when there are such high-stake decisions to be made.”
The board will interview the candidates and vote during a special meeting Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the board room of the Administration Building. A work session will follow.
