Woman escapes mine collapse

Mrs. John Dudan of Luzerne Street was swallowed by the earth while walking near Washburn Street and Grant Avenue. Dudan fell through a 3-foot-wide mine subsidence and ended up about 15 feet underground.

The accident occurred while she was walking her son, George, to school. George saw his mother fall and immediately ran for help to a nearby home. The residents and several miners responded and were able to rescue her from the hole.

Dudan reported that she lost her pocketbook and her hat when she fell into the hole.

Singing preachers at Elm Park Church

The Singing Preachers decided they enjoyed Scranton so much that they would stay for another week.

The group was made up of 12 ordained ministers who loved to sing or play instruments. They arrived the previous week for a series of evening musical services at Elm Park Church as part of the church’s evangelical campaign.

Adding something new, the Singing Preachers planned to form a children’s choir for a special service to be held Nov. 14. Children from around the city were invited to join regardless of their faith.
