Sentence delayed in manslaughter

SCRANTON - A South Side man facing 10 years in prison for fatally shooting a Harrisburg man in a Cedar Avenue bar will not be sentenced until November.

Derrick Phillips, 41, shot Malik Asad Carter, 28, on May 16, 2011, when the two met in the doorway of the bathroom at Finn McCool's, 1608 Cedar Ave.

Mr. Phillips pleaded guilty earlier this year only to voluntary manslaughter, which could land him in state prison for 10 years.

Mr. Phillips had faced eight other counts, including criminal homicide, but they were dropped as part of the plea agreement based on Mr. Phillips' belief that his own life was in danger.

Mr. Phillips' sentencing was rescheduled to Nov. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
