Theresa and John Donnini clasped each other's wrinkled hands and gazed unwaveringly into the other's eyes Sunday.

Fifty years ago, they married in St. Peter's Cathedral. Three children and six grandchildren later, the Covington Twp. couple stood in the same church with more than 250 other couples from the Diocese of Scranton on Sunday afternoon - all celebrating their 25th, 50th or 50-plus wedding anniversaries this year.

Dressed in their Sunday best, husbands recited vows, followed by wives: "I will love you and honor you all the days of my life."

And with a gentle kiss, the Donninis sealed the deal.

Bishop Joseph C. Bambera officiated, commending the couples on the exemplary roles they played in their marriages through their sacrifice, selflessness, faith and love.

"I hope you feel a sense of pride in your hearts," he said. "Nothing more than your lives speaks to the power of faith."

Priests and deacons from around the diocese took part in the ceremony with family and friends crowding in the church to see the couples renew their oaths to one another, after which everyone gathered at the former Holy Cross High School for a reception.

The Donninis looked at each other after the Mass and agreed the secret to a long and happy marriage is simple - forgiveness.

"It's such a wonderful feeling to reach 50 years together," Mrs. Donnini said.
