It is unlikely the state Department of Transportation will allow a bridge that crosses the Roaring Brook on Interstate 84 to be posted for weight with numerous other regional bridges by next year, a PennDOT spokesman said Tuesday.
The I-84 bridge in Roaring Brook Twp. was among 123 Northeast Pennsylvania bridges on state roads a PennDOT priority list showed would need weight restrictions without a major influx of funding from Harrisburg.
Scott Christie, deputy secretary for highway administration, said on Monday the list reflects the consequences of the Legislature not approving at least the $1.8 billion in extra revenue Gov. Tom Corbett proposes over five years.
The priority list was created during a review of data on deteriorating bridges, but James May, the PennDOT spokesman, said of the I-84 bridge: "That's one where we would most likely shuffle money around to keep it from being posted."
"That's money that would not be spent on some other bridge somewhere else," Mr. May said.
I-84 is a major transportation hub that connects Pennsylvania to other states like New York and New Jersey and is frequented by heavy tractor trailers hauling cargo.
The 1,067-foot bridge was built in 1974.
