The tie is broken, but the race is on.

Throop Councilman Mark Mazak won a draw of numbers Friday to break a tie for the final Democratic nomination to four council seats. The tiebreaker left newcomer James A. Barnick out of the money on the Democratic side, but Mr. Barnick remains in the race as a Republican candidate.

They will vie with three other candidates for the seats in the Nov. 5 municipal election.

Both men received 561 Democratic votes during the May 21 primary election. An official count last week of the election-night tally did not change the results, necessitating the lottery.

Mr. Barnick also lost a lottery on the Republican side, but in that case he and Robert Magliocchi were tied for third with 13 write-in votes each. The lottery gave Mr. Magliocchi the third position on the Republican ballot, and Mr. Barnick the fourth.

Borough council President Thomas Lukasewicz and Councilmen John Musewicz and Neil Furiosi finished one-two-three for the other Democratic nominations. Mr. Lukasewicz and Mr. Furiosi finished one-two in write-in votes on the Republican ballot.

Bureau of Elections officials also broke a tie via lottery for position on the Republican ballot in Dunmore. Damon Bowen won the top ballot spot over Councilwoman Carol Scrimalli. Both had 37 write-in votes. The other Republican nominee for three council seats is Councilman Timothy Burke, who had 35 write-in votes.

Mr. Burke and Ms. Scrimalli also won Democratic nominations. The other Democratic nominee is Tom Hallinan; Mr. Bowen will run against the three.

The board of elections ordered a recount Friday in the race for the Republican nomination in Region 3 of the Carbondale Area School Board, but the recount changed nothing.

Director Tracey Andrews still had 62 votes and Cindy Turonis Artone 61. The race was tied at 61 after the election night tally, but the official count showed a military ballot cast for Ms. Andrews.

Mrs. Artone easily won the Democratic nomination, so the two women will face each other for the seat in November.

The board of elections is scheduled to meet Thursday at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse to certify the election results.
