Alliance honors depot with award

The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance recognized the Army's century of service at Tobyhanna when Jeffrey Box, Alliance president and CEO, presented the annual Regional Leadership Award to depot commander Col. Gerhard P.R. Schröter.

Speaking to some 140 guests about the depot's service to the armed forces, Jeffrey cited its role as the largest employer in the region, and the economic impact it has on the surrounding seven counties during the alliance's 48th annual dinner.

"As we look to a future of opportunities, we will continue to look to our regional partners. NEPA's regional focus and efforts are very valuable, we will continue to work on issues that affect all of us," Col. Schröter said, accepting the award, and thanking Jeffrey for his leadership and NEPA's commitment to Tobyhanna.

The NEPA Alliance Regional Leadership Award is dedicated in memory of John J. Luciani, former NEPA board chairman, and other past chairmen, according to its website. It represents the dedication for the people of our region, passion for economic growth and hard work that formed the foundation and advancement of NEPA.

Tobyhanna Army Depot also received two proclamations from local elected officials recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Army's arrival here and the depot, which opened its doors in 1953.

"The depot's impact is huge," said Jeffrey. "The region has unified to support this fine facility."

Col. Schröter added, "the NEPA and Tobyhanna relationship is strengthened by our teamwork. We are very proud to call Northeastern Pennsylvania our home."

Vergnetti due Rinaldi Award

This year's William P. Rinaldi Memorial Award will be presented to Leo P. Vergnetti at the United Nations Day Program observing the 67th anniversary of the founding of the U.N. on Wednesday, at the Radisson at Lackawanna Station hotel in Scranton.

Presented annually, the United Nations Association-USA of Northeastern Pennsylvania Award is given to an outstanding and dedicated community activist. And all of the attributes of such an individual, "and more, sum up Leo Vergnetti," said Mary Rinaldi, wife of the community activist for whom the award is named and head of the selection committee.

"I have known Leo for 35 years and have been able to observe what he does in the community and beyond for people - as individuals and as groups - to influence or help. His interests are vast and his contributions valued throughout our region."

Leo joins a long list of outstanding community members who have received the Rinaldi Award, including Bob and Sherry Durkin, Judge Thomas J. Munley, former Scranton Mayor David Wenzel, Midori Yamagouchi-Rynn, Ph.D., Monsignor John Essef, Dr. Edward and Regina Boehm, and Sondra Myers.
