Canoe Club women at Patsel's
The Women's Golf Organization of the Scranton Canoe Club conducted its opening day luncheon and meeting at Patsel's Restaurant in Glenburn.
Alma Odell arranged a luncheon including a choice of soups; chicken, black bean or pea; and grilled chicken served over salad greens with blue cheese and poached pears.
Chairwoman Mary Murphy Fox, conducted the meeting. Committee reports were given, the list of officers and committee chairwomen of the events scheduled for the season were distributed.
Officers, along with Mary, include Doris Lindsley, vice chairwoman; Pat Fairall Chipak, treasurer; Gail Miller, assistant treasurer; Donna Noone, secretary, and Maureen Saunders, assistant secretary.

Jacob Karboski of Scranton has earned a REACH-EI program partial scholarship to attend the Commonwealth Medical College Doctor of Medicine program. Jacob, a West Scranton High School graduate, earned his bachelor's degree in three-and-half years at the University of Scranton, participated in a pre-health professional program in the summer of 2011 and continues to work with the program as a mentor and resident director for the high school branch. Jacob is the son of Joseph and Elaine Karboski.

Christopher Bates of the Hotel Fauchere in Milford has been welcomed as a member of the Court of Master Sommeliers. Christopher successfully passed three stages of the court's educational programs including the invitation-only Master Sommelier Diploma Exam's three sections - a theory examination, blind tasting and practical service component. He was honored along with three other new members during a program at Little Nell in Aspen, Colo. "On behalf of the entire court, I would like to congratulate all four candidates for reaching the final stage of the examination process, and heartily welcome Christopher Bates, Carlton McCoy, Emily Pickral-Papach and Christopher Tanghe to our organization," said Greg Harrington, chairman of the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas. "They truly represent the best of the best and we look forward to their future contributions to the court and the wine industry as a whole."
