CLARKS SUMMIT - Upperclassmen at Abington Heights High School could see a new school day schedule in the upcoming year based around an "open block" model.

High School Principal Pamela Murray pitched an in-depth presentation to the Abington Heights School Board at Wednesday night's meeting about combining sixth and seventh period during the school day to create one almost 90-minute block where students would both eat lunch and focus on personalized and individual education goals.

Students would use the time to work on group projects, focus on putting more time into a certain subject or activity, complete an out-of-building work study or internship or even just socialize and network among their peers, Ms. Murray said.

"We're trying with the open block, to give students choice," she said.

Ms. Murray said a student survey will be completed Friday and she will hold a staff meeting, both of which will determine whether the schedule change proposal will move forward. The next step, she said, is taking input from parents. If all goes well, she hopes to implement the schedule for the 2013-14 school year.

Superintendent Michael Mahon, Ph.D, and the board responded positively to the possibility, which would entrust students to hold themselves accountable and encourage them to pursue their interests.

"What we're saying is we have faith in our students," Dr. Mahon said.

Also at Wednesday's meeting, outgoing freshman Colin Florey led a group of students and parents who support starting a varsity lacrosse team at the high school. He presented the board with a preliminary budget.

Colin's mother, Beth Florey of Clarks Summit, said she and other parents were interested in talking to district officials to possibly get a team on the field for the spring season.

Board members agreed to continue discussions but expressed concerns regarding funding and Title IX compliance.
