Couple work on anniversary

Officers don't usually have same shift

They're partners in life, and on Tuesday they were partners on the job.

Sheri Salvo, a police officer for Avoca and Duryea, and her husband, Kenneth Salvo Jr., an Avoca officer, usually end up working opposite shifts.

On Tuesday - which happened to be their third anniversary - Ken Salvo was on day shift.

"My husband tried to get out of it because he thought I would be mad if he worked on our anniversary," Sheri Salvo said.

Then she found out Avoca Police Chief David Homschek scheduled them for the same shift.

It was odd: "We hardly ever work together," she said.

But it was a nice anniversary present. The Salvos got to spend at least part of the day together, which they wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

"It was pretty fun," Ken Salvo said.

For their break, they went to Romano's in Avoca where they had another anniversary treat.

"Some other officers were there and they paid for our lunch," Sheri Salvo said.

The Salvos didn't plan to celebrate Tuesday night. Instead, they had to take their five children to various activities and also work on the new home they just bought in Duryea.

They do intend to make up for it this weekend by doing something special to commemorate their anniversary.

Ken Salvo, an Avoca native, wanted to serve his community. Sheri, already an officer, inspired her husband to switch his career in construction for police work.

When he graduated from Lackawanna College Police Academy in 2011, Sheri presented Ken with his diploma.

An advantage the Salvos have is that when they get home, there's no need to talk about work, so they can focus on family and relaxation.

"I enjoy it," Ken Salvo said.
