Woman's death in creek
ruled accidental drowning
The Sunday death of a Hop Bottom woman in a Wyoming County creek has been ruled an accidental drowning, Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland confirmed.
Chastity Cobb, 33, was swimming with two others in the South Branch of Tunkhannock Creek Sunday afternoon in an area known as "little Rocky Glen" off Lithia Valley Road in Clinton Twp.
One swimmer was wedged between rocks near a geologic formation known for difficult currents, emergency responders said Sunday. There are "no swimming" signs posted at the rock formation.
"It's been a problem for years," said Wyoming County Director of Emergency Management Eugene Dziak, referring to the stream. "That creek does not look like it will eat you up, but it will."
The region's emergency responders rescued the three, including the Tunkhannock dive rescue dive team, and took them to Geisinger Community Medical Center at around 1 p.m. Ms. Cobb was pronounced dead at 2:04 p.m.
State police at Tunkhannock are investigating the incident.
The Times-Tribune incorrectly reported Ms. Cobb's age as 34 in Monday's edition. In fact, she was 33.
