LA PLUME - Just two weeks after her last radiation treatment, Heidi Harvey of Hop Bottom went to Keystone College on Friday to see her daughter's part in the fight against breast cancer.

"You don't really realize how many people it affects until it affects you," said Ms. Harvey, who was diagnosed with the disease in February.

When it came time for her daughter, Jordan Harvey, and her classmates to decide on a capstone project for their senior year, she thought of her mother.

Jordan Harvey and five classmates planned the inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness march held Friday night, albeit slightly diminished by uncooperative weather.

Still, Jordan Harvey, her mother and her classmates came out with a small group of supporters to march from the Keystone campus to the Factoryville Fire Company hall, where they finished the evening with a party and raffle drawing.

The proceeds of the march's $5 registration fees will benefit the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, said Jerry Jones of Dunmore, one of the students organizing the march.

As for Heidi Harvey, long and challenging as her personal journey dealing with her illness has been, her arrival at the fire hall Friday night marked a success far more significant than completing an evening walk.

"You think it's going to be a long, hard road, and it was hard," Ms. Harvey said of her cancer treatment. "I'm just glad it's over."
