June 22 will be Leadership day

Leadership Lackawanna has "proudly" announced that June 22 has been designated as "Leadership Lackawanna Day" in Pennsylvania. House Resolution No. 247 recognizes the group for more than 30 years of outstanding service in our area.

Among those on hand for the announcement were Ken Adams, Nicole Barber, Dan Bosse, Julie Cohen, Nate Donati, Penka Farina, state Rep. Marty Flynn, who spearheaded the resolution effort; Shamus Ford, Leigh Magnotta, Dan LaMagna, Brooke Praefke, Robbie Risley, Alysia Scazafabo, Amy Surridge, Alison Woody and Brian Yearing.

Leadership Lackawanna was founded on June 22, 1982, as a community education organization. It offers programs to Lackawanna County professionals to enhance their skills and knowledge and help them better serve their organizations and communities.

More than 1,400 graduates of Leadership Lackawanna comprise the Leadership Lackawanna Alumni and Friends Association, which encourages and fosters the development of leaders in the greater Scranton area.

Brent J. Lane has graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as an ensign. Ensign Lane is the son of Jo and Gregory Lane of Moosic. He is a 2009 graduate of Riverside Junior/Senior High School. ... Marine Corps Pvt. Nicholas B. Hughes, a 2010 graduate of West Scranton High School, has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. ... Army National Guard Pfc. Joseph J. Flesher has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. Pfc. Flesher is the son of Robert and Maureen Schoonover of Dickson City, and a 1999 graduate of Mid Valley High School.

High notes

A Red Cross committee including Penny Common, board member; Carol Crane, major gifts associate; attorney Alan Schoen, board chairman and chairman of Everyday Heroes Awards committee; Linda Robeson and Elaine Shepard, board members; is accepting nominations of ordinary people who have performed the extraordinary deed of saving someone's life. Those selected in categories including military, adult good samaritan, firefighter, law enforcement, emergency services and medical will be honored at the Everyday Heroes Awards on June 20 at Genetti Manor in Dickson City.
