Homicide charges bound for trial
HONESDALE - Homicide charges against a man accused of killing his brother were bound over for court after a two-hour preliminary hearing Monday.
Benjamin Kiefer, 30, allegedly shot and killed his brother, Kenneth Kiefer with a .45 caliber handgun on March 23 in Texas Twp. after an argument.
At the time, Mr. Kiefer had admitted to shooting his brother but maintained that it was in self-defense. Their younger brother, Kevin Kiefer, said Mr. Keifer came out of his bedroom with his hand behind his back holding a gun and fired at Kenneth.
Son may testify against mother
WILKES-BARRE - As Angelina Deabreu is tried this week on accusations she helped cover up a fatal shooting involving her teenage son, the boy is expected to be a key witness - for the prosecution.
When jury selection began Monday, prosecutors revealed Mrs. Deabreu's son, Elijah Yussuf, 14, will be called by the commonwealth to testify against his mother.
Elijah fatally shot his neighbor, Tyler Winstead, 14, while playing with a gun inside Ms. Deabreu's bedroom, then dragged Tyler's body onto Hill Street in Wilkes-Barre and concocted a story of a drive-by shooting, police have said.
Mrs. Deabreu, 31, who was not home at the time, will stand trial in Luzerne County Court on claims that she advanced the false story of a drive-by shooting, hid the gun and cleaned the crime scene with bleach. Court officials say Mrs. Deabreu's trial will last about two days. Jury selection continues today.
