Administrative Office of Pa. Courts
Magisterial District Judges Terry Gallagher, Laura Turlip and Theodore J. Giglio were again certified for service as members of Pennsylvania's Unified Judicial System after successful completion recently of continuing legal education course work. Conducted by the Minor Judiciary Education Board and the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts, the educational program for magisterial district judges is held in Harrisburg.

Steve Tagert, president, was awarded special recognition from the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Water Works at its annual meeting in Hershey. The resolution acknowledged Mr. Tagert for his special effort, work experience and leadership, which has provided invaluable and consistent service to the water industry and the PA AWWA Section membership.

Eileen R. Lynch has been promoted to manager of the bank's Simpson office. In this role, Ms. Lynch will manage branch operations and sales efforts including the development of new business and customer service efforts. She resides in Forest City.
F.M. Kirby Foundation
The foundation has announced the election of its first non-family board of directors in more than 60 years.
Dr. Wilson M. Compton, M.D., M.P.E., is the director of the Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Compton received his undergraduate education from Amherst College. He attended medical school and completed his residency training in psychiatry at Washington University. He lives in the Washington, D.C., area.
Sandra Brown Sherman is a partner in Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland Perretti's tax, trusts and estates practice and is based in the firm's Morristown, N.J., office. Ms. Sherman has been the F.M. Kirby Foundation's counsel for the past decade. Ms. Sherman graduated from Indiana University, (B.M.E.) and the University of Illinois, (J.D. magna cum laude; LL.M). She lives in Union County, N.J.

Shelly Timmons, M.D., neurosurgeon was elected to the board of directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Timmons is the director of neurotrauma and associate director for neurosciences, adult ICU. She is also the program director for new neurosurgery residency training program.

Lori Thomas recently celebrated 25 years of service with the company. Ms. Thomas began her career as a customer service representative in 1988 and has since been promoted to credit manager for the company. She was recognized at the annual holiday party. Mrs. Thomas, along with her husband, Butch, and daughter, Ruthie, live in Sugar Notch.

John P. Argonish has joined the Hilton Scranton and Conference Center as director of sales and marketing. Mr. Argonish is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and is a board member of the Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter and is president of the Lackawanna County Hoteliers Association. He lives in Old Forge with his wife, Laurie, and son.
Ashley Kuback has been promoted to senior sales manager. Ms. Kuback is a graduate of Keystone College and is a board member of the local chapter of Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association and is the chairwoman of the Lackawanna County Hoteliers Association. She lives in Tunkhannock.

Gary P. Celli, P.M.P., C.B.M., was promoted to vice president of Horizontal Integration and Solutons for ManTech International. He will be responsible of integrating various technological capabilities across existing and expanding customer base. Mr. Celli is also a recent graduate of the MIT Sloan Executive Leadership Institute. He lives in Olyphant.

Gary Griffith, 22-year CPG logistics industry veteran, has been named the company's new senior vice president of business development and marketing. Mr. Griffith will direct national sales and marketing efforts to offer optimum logistics solutions to the consumer packaged goods industry. He holds certificates in warehousing operations from North Carolina State University and global logistics technology from Lenoir College.

Matthew P. Keris, shareholder in the Scranton office, attended the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance's annual conference in San Antonio, where he moderated the session, "The Ex-Employee: Discovery/Privilege Issues When the Plaintiff's Lawyer Comes Knockin'." Mr. Keris also spoke at the Lehigh Valley Health Network's annual risk symposium on the topic of "Deposition Issues Pertaining to the Electronic Medical Record." Mr. Keris is a member of the firm's health care department. He is a graduate of Shippensburg University and Roger Williams University School of Law.
Misericordia University
Alicia Nordstrom, Ph.D., psychology professor, has been invited to present her research from "The Voices Project," a three-year study on stereotypes and prejudice in college students, at the International Conference on the Teaching of Psychology to be held in July in Vancouver, British Columbia. The presentation, "Stereotypes and Prejudices in College Students: Identifiable Patterns and Classroom Interventions," involves her research that uncovered five distinct patterns of prejudice in students in her introduction to psychology classes. Dr. Nordstrom is a child clinical psychologist who joined the university faculty in 2004. She obtained her master's degree from Purdue University and her doctorate in psychology from the Pennsylvania State University. She completed her pre-doctoral internship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
The university has awarded tenure and promotion to four members of the faculty:
Richard "Woody" Haydt, D.P.T., O.C.S., M.T.C., F.A.A.O.M.P.T., was promoted to associate professor of physical therapy and tenured. Dr. Haydt of Mountaintop also serves as a part time physical therapist at Nova Care Physical Therapy, Plains. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy at University of St. Augustine, with a certification in manual therapy. Dr. Haydt also holds a master's degree in physical therapy from Arcadia University and a bachelor's degree in business administration from Wilkes University. He teaches a variety of classes in the entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and serves as secretary of the Misericordia Faculty Welfare Committee.
Allen C. Minor, D.B.A., was promoted to associate professor of business and tenured. Dr. Minor of Moscow is the director of the health care management program. He attained extensive business management experience as vice president and chief financial officer, and later as vice president of operations for Community Medical Center Healthcare System, Scranton. Dr. Minor earned his Doctor of Business Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University, a master's degree in health care finance from University of South Carolina and a bachelor's degree in accounting from University of Baltimore. He also holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Baltimore and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He teaches classes in business law, health care systems management and health care finance and is conducting research regarding the benefit of implementing wellness programs to industry and government.
Corina N. Slaff, M.B.A., Ph.D., was promoted to associate professor of business and tenured. Dr. Slaff of Shavertown holds a Ph.D. in organization and management with a specialization in leadership from Capella University. She also earned a Master of Business Administration and a bachelor's degree from Wilkes University. She currently serves as adviser to all MBA students. She teaches graduate courses in the Master of Science in organizational management and the MBA programs.
Ruixia Yan, Ph.D., was promoted to associate professor of speech-language pathology and tenured. Dr. Yan of Mountaintop holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in communicative disorders from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She earned Master of Arts in English linguistics and literature and a Bachelor of Arts in foreign languages (English and German) from Shanxi University, China. Dr. Yan's research centers on normal speech and language acquisition and development, child language disorders, language assessment, articulatory and phonological disorders, multilingualism in speech-language pathology (SLP), and research methods and designs in SLP.

Grace Sheldon Fisher, Ed.D., O.T.R./L., chairwoman of the occupational therapy department, was promoted to full professor of occupational therapy. Dr. Fisher of Dallas holds a doctoral degree in educational administration from Temple University, a Master of Science in human services administration from Misericordia University and a post-baccalaureate certificate of proficiency in occupational therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Wilkes University.
Cosima Wiese, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, contributed to the recent Environmental Protection Agency report, "Integrated Science Assessment for Ozone and Related Photo Chemical Oxidants," that was published in the Federal Register, Vol. 78 No. 32.
Pennsylvania Bar Association
Francis X. O'Connor, a sole practitioner in Great Bend, will become president-elect of the bar association on Friday at the conclusion of the PBA annual meeting in Pittsburgh. Mr. O'Connor will become president of the 28,000-member statewide lawyers association in 2014. Mr. O'Connor serves as solicitor for and is a life member of the Great Bend Fire Company. He is an Eagle Scout and is an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 89 of the Boy Scouts of America. He is a Eucharistic minister at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also serves as a member/attendant for the Great Bend/Hallstead Volunteer Ambulance Company. Mr. O'Connor is a graduate of the University of Scranton and the St. Louis University Law School.
Regional Hospital of Scranton
Akash D. Agarwal, M.D., neurosurgeon, an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, has joined the medical staff of Regional Hospital of Scranton and is accepting patients. Dr. Agarwal has also rejoined the neuroscience team at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and the staff of Penn State Hershey Neurosurgery at Wyoming Valley. Board-certified in neurosurgery, Dr. Agarwal earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Boston University and his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and served an internship in general surgery at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, New York City. He also completed a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neurosurgery at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

James Kolata has been appointed as director of sales support and analysis. Mr. Kolata will be responsible for leading the development and execution efforts for all new client contracts and business partnerships. The former Scranton resident holds a bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University.
Margaret Manley has been appointed to director of performance measurement and reporting. Ms. Manley will oversee all client contractual performance reporting, monitoring of timely report completion and distribution of reports. She holds a bachelor's degree in accountancy from Wilkes University and an associate's degree in information systems technology from Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke.
Victims Resource Center
Janet MacKay of Tunkhannock has been selected as the Tunkhannock Business and Professional Women Woman of the Year 2013. Ms. MacKay is the executive director of the Victims Resource Center. Ms. MacKay received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Millersville University, her master's in social work from Marywood University School of Social Work and is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania. She currently is an adjunct faculty member at Pennsylvania State University Wilkes-Barre campus, where she teaches a course in sexual and Domestic Violence in the Administration of Justice Department. She lives in Tunkhannock, is a member of Tunkhannock BPW and currently serves as their first vice president.
