Mission to ban Styrofoam

Wayne Memorial Hospital staff members are on a mission to ban Styrofoam forever from hospital food services. The staff hopes to rid the cafeteria completely of all Styrofoam and are currently looking for replacement (and recyclable) hot/cold beverage containers.

Blue Cross makes honor roll: Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania was named to the E-power Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll for its efforts to become more energy efficient.

Bank donates: First National Community Bank announced a $250 donation to the Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care as part of the Community Caring employee volunteer program.

Credit union celebrates: Freedom Credit Union celebrated National Credit Union Youth Week with a "Savings Sleuth Scavenger Hunt." Young members answered a Freedom trivia question each day. Correctly answered questions were randomly selected to win $50.

Grants available: Nonprofit groups seeking funding may qualify for a community mini-grant from the Wayne Memorial Health Foundation. The grants are geared toward organizations focused on "injury and disease prevention and treatment and the promotion of good health for the residents in the Wayne Memorial Health System service area." Applications, due June 30, and guidelines may be obtained from Wayne Memorial Health Foundation, Attn: Jack Dennis, 601 Park Street, Honesdale, PA 18431 or by calling 251-6533 or emailing dennis@wmh.org.

Donation received: First National Community Bank made a $1,000 donation to the Scranton Office of Economic and Community Development. The donation was used as part of the "The Great Down Payment Giveaway" at the South Scranton HOME Ownership Fair coordinated by the United Neighborhood Center's Elm Street Revitalization Project. The contribution will help an income-eligible person or family purchase a home.

Department recognized: The Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center endoscopy department was awarded recognition as a unit dedicated to quality care through the Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Pool installed: Pike Physical Therapy, Dingman's Ferry, installed a therapy and fitness Endless Pool in its new aquatic center.

Center opens: Officials from Geisinger Health System and Bucknell University celebrated the grand opening of the Autism and Developmental Medicine Center, a national model for implementing guidelines for early diagnosis, medication management and treatment options for children with developmental disorders.

Firm awarded: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, an architecture and design firm started in Northeast Pennsylvania in 1965, has been awarded the Good Design is Good Business Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of contributions to bettering how organizations perform through architecture.

Employees take a walk: Around 100 employees from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania participated in a walk through downtown Wilkes-Barre in celebration of National Walk@Lunch Day on April 24.

Team meets: The industrial advisory team at Luzerne County Community College met at the College's Educational Conference Center. The team is designed to provide a forum to exchange information between industry professionals and LCCC staff.

Grand opening held: RACO Jewelry hosted its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30 in Wilkes-Barre.

Day designated: Leadership Lackawanna has announced that June 22 has been designated as "Leadership Lackawanna Day" in Pennsylvania as a result of House Resolution 247. Leadership Lackawanna is being recognized for more than 30 years of service.
