Counties set to pick dairy princess
Sharon Snyder and Mary Beth Tranovich will compete for the title of Wyoming-Lackawanna County Dairy Princess on Saturday.
Sharon and Mary Beth, who both are 17 and from Greenfield Twp., will present dairy skits for school-aged children and speeches for their adult audience during a pageant at the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church.
"We are excited to have such a talented pair of candidates for the title of dairy princess this year," said Mary Fetter, chairwoman of the two-county program. "For the next year, they will be charged with promoting the dairy industry and reaching out to educate consumers about what happens on local dairy farms and the importance of dairy as part of a well-balanced diet."
Sharon, daughter of Linda and David Snyder, is a junior at Lakeland Junior-Senior High School, who plans to study agribusiness management at Cornell University. Mary Beth, daughter of Mary Ann and Brian Tranovich, is a junior at Scranton Prep.
A team of dairy ambassadors including: Emma Loch, 15, of Nicholson; Jeremy Rabe, 15, and Jonathan Rabe, 14, of Evans Falls; Dairy Maid Sara Fetter, 13, of Dalton and Dairy Miss Destiney Rabe, 11, of Evans Falls, will present short speeches.
Retiring 2012-2013 Dairy Princess Brianna Smarkusky of Nicholson and Alternate Dairy Princess Whisperlyn Jaget of Dunmore will be honored.
Alumnus of the year
Bob Ghigiarelli will be named Alumnus of the Year when the Greater Scranton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association conducts its 35th annual chapter dinner Wednesday, May 8, at Genetti's Manor, Dickson City.
Nittany Lion Head Football Coach Bill O'Brien will be the featured speaker at the event.
Bob, a 1961 Penn State graduate who earned a football scholarship and played under Rip Engle and Joe Paterno; was high school principal and superintendent of the Lakeland School District; taught in Scranton and Abington Heights and coached at Old Forge and Riverside. Married to the former Joyce Alberigi, he has two sons, Rob and Dr. Chad Ghigiarelli.
The chapter also will award several scholarships to area Penn State students and present the Men's and Women's Student Athlete of the Year Awards to two Scranton campus standouts during the dinner.

St. Ubaldo Society's Hospitality Night, where May events in Jessup will be officially announced, is tonight. Committee members, including Peter Anelli, president; Paul Angeloni, vice president; Maria Angeloni, secretary; Linda Anelli, events coordinator/corresponding secretary; Michael Cappellin and Enrico Anelli, directors; and David Valvano, president of the Family of St. Anthony; Scott Hall of the Family of St. George; Greg Santarelli, Family of St. Ubaldo; and Richard Troiani, Family of St. Anthony; have planned an evening at the St. Ubaldo Society Cultural Center that will include naming the 2013 Capodieci, capoccetta and primo capitano.
