Matt McGloin is headed to the Washington Redskins.
Penn State's record-setting quarterback made it official Tuesday afternoon, announcing that he will attend rookie camp Thursday hoping to earn a free-agent contract and roster spot for training camp.
According to a press release by McGloin's agent Mark Magazu II, if McGloin is not offered a contract following the Redskins mini camp, he will attend camp next weekend with another team.
"I am ready," McGloin said. "I am more relieved than anything that the process is over. We had an offer after the draft and had several teams interested and I just had to weigh my options and am happy to be going to Washington."
Magazu also announced in the statement that McGloin was offered a contract from an undisclosed team following the draft, however, he "respectfully declined."
“Matt was grateful for the offer, but the team had clearly established quarterbacks at all levels which would have made pathways difficult for Matt to catch on,” Magazu said in the statement. “It was a gamble, but we think a wise one. Our goal is to help Matt find opportunities that provide clear and plausible pathways for success with an NFL team.”
McGloin, a former All-Region quarterback from West Scranton High School, became the full-time starter at Penn State in 2012 under the guidance of first-year coach Bill O'Brien, the former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the New England Patriots.
Playing in a pro-style offense the 6-foot-1, 209-pound McGloin shined, throwing for 3,271 yards with 24 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
In his career at Penn State, McGloin finished with 6,390 yards, 46 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
He went undrafted this past weekend, but Monday Magazu, president of Atlas Strategies, which represents the quarterback, confirmed that as many as six NFL teams had reached out to him, interested in McGloin.
"It was a diffuicult process," McGloin said. "We waited for offers to come in and we had six to eight teams contact us and I decided to go to Washington, where I think I can go and make an impact.
"Hopefully, I will prove that i can get the job done and impress some people."
The Redskins won the NFC East last season while being led by the dynamic Robert Griffin III at quarterback. However, he was injured in last season's playoff game against the Seahawks and is recovering from a ACL surgery. Kirk Cousins was also drafted in 2012 and played as the Redskins backup last season.
“Matt was honored to receive so many invitations following the draft, with 8 teams calling to bring him in,” Magazu said in the statement. ”For this weekend’s mini camp, he’s chosen the Redskins because he admires the organization and the way they develop quarterbacks in that system.”
