DICKSON CITY - Standing in what will be an all-glass entryway, Ches Forconi pointed out the future home of every borough resource citizens will need.
One door will lead to council chambers. Another will access the tax collector and zoning officer. The Police Department will have a 6,000-square-foot space through another door.
Renovation and construction on the new Dickson City Borough Building is scheduled for completion by Oct. 1, said Mr. Forconi, the borough manager. In early 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program approved a $5.7 million loan to fund the project.
"We'll be transitioning in as they're finishing," he said.
The inside of the main building is taking shape, with Sheetrock and utilities in place and an elevator installed. Crews are constructing the addition that will hold the Police Department.
"You'll never outgrow this building," said Carl Scartelli, the superintendent from Scartelli Construction Services, one of the prime contractors.
The two-story structure at Enterprise Drive and Eagle Lane will provide much-needed space for record storage and the Police Department, which had been working out of the cellar in the existing Borough Building. On the second floor, office space and a large meeting room will be available for community groups.
"This has been talked about for at least 20 years," said Councilman Mike Fedorka, chairman of the building committee.
Some residents have been skeptical about the project and the 40-year debt service, but Mr. Fedorka said if the project had been delayed, loan money might not have been available. He also anticipates income from the sale of the current borough and DPW buildings to offset some of the cost.
