A newborn is dead after complications following a car crash that injured her pregnant mother and sent two others to the hospital April 17.
The Montour County coroner's office alerted Scranton police Friday that Cecelia Baracaia died at Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville, where she was taken after the crash.
Scranton police Lt. Marty Crofton said Sara Baracaia of Moosic, who police said was nearly full term, was driving on Harrison Avenue when she struck a McCarthy Flowered Cab driven by John Larusso, 62, Scranton. The cab driver pulled out in front of her after stopping at a stop sign, Lt. Crofton said.
Ms. Baracaia was taken to Moses Taylor Hospital, where she gave birth to the baby, who was then taken to the Danville hospital for further treatment. Two customers riding in the cab were taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Mr. Larusso was cited for a stop-sign violation, but the investigation is ongoing. The Lackawanna County district attorney's office has been alerted of Cecelia's death.
Cecelia's obituary can be found on Page B8.
